NEW YORK -- Yankees utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. has been listed as
day-to-day after an MRI exam taken Thursday revealed tendinitis in his left
wrist, which required his second cortisone injection of the season.
Hairston was removed from Wednesday's 3-2 win at Angel Stadium after feeling
a popping sensation in the wrist, batting in the seventh inning against
reliever Jason Bulger. Hairston tried a practice swing after the pitch and
felt pain.
"It's just been bothering me the last three weeks or so," Hairston said on
Wednesday. "It felt really weird. I've never had that. I felt something pop
and I tried to take another swing and felt kind of a sharp pain. Right now,
I'm hoping it's scar tissue or something I can play through."
Hairston said that he had recently had a cortisone injection in the wrist and
that the pain has tended to come and go, but the Yankees have been able to
keep it in check. He said that he injured the wrist while diving for a foul
ball in June while with the Reds.
He was examined on Thursday by hand specialist Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser in New
York.
A July 31 acquisition from Cincinnati, Hairston is batting .235 (16-for-68)
with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 40 games for the Yankees, filling in at
third base, shortstop and all three outfield positions.
