Yankees' interest may grow if Wang needs surgery One of the big shoes of Trade Deadline season -- Oakland outfielder Matt Holliday -- has fallen. Will the other shoe -- Roy Halladay -- also drop? With a week remaining before the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline -- but only four days to go to Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi's self-imposed deadline -- the scuffle for the Toronto ace could be heating up in Birmingham, Ala. That is where Dr. James Andrews will examine the right shoulder of idled Yankees starter Chien-Ming Wang. And if the noted orthopedist's diagnosis includes season-ending surgery, general manager Brian Cashman could dive into the Halladay sweepstakes with both feet. There is a lot of posturing going on everywhere, but Doc may yet emerge as the front for the biggest Boston-Bronx skirmish yet. Doing nothing to lessen that impression is Cashman's admission that "there is a [pitching] depth issue that is real." If Wang is formally ruled out for the season -- look out. There is a credible perception that Ricciardi is loathe to deal Halladay within his own division. The Blue Jays see themselves as contenders ravaged this season by injuries -- a role that would certainly be impacted in the future by Halladay's presence on another AL East staff. However, the breakout of a bidding war between the Red Sox and the Yankees would only improve the potential bounty for Halladay -- perhaps to a level to make a deal palatable.
