Odds & Ends From Turner Field
Tyler Kepner
ATLANTA — Some loose ends from Wednesday….
The players were quite amused to see Mariano Rivera bat. He did it once
before, striking out against Philadelphia’s Ryan Franklin on June 20, 2006.
Using Cody Ransom’s bat, Alfredo Aceves’ helmet and Melky Cabrera’s
batting gloves, Rivera lined to center – an impressive hack for a player
who never even takes batting practice. “That’s what happens when you’ve
got skills,” Robinson Cano said. Rivera said he knew he wasn’t supposed
to swing, but he couldn’t resist.
Joba Chamberlain got a signed jersey from Chipper Jones before the game,
then gave up two singles to him in three at-bats. Chamberlain was a Braves
fan growing up in Nebraska, and watched Jones on TBS. “I tried not to get
out of control too much,” he said. “I’ve looked up to that man for a
long time.” Jones, for his part, chided Chamberlain for hitting the line
drive that knocked Atlanta’s Kenshin Kawakami from the game. “You’re not
supposed to take out my pitcher,” Jones said.
Joba
Brian Cashman did not say how much the Cleveland Indians paid for reliever
Jose Veras, only that it was over the $20,000 waiver price. In that case,
it was more than Cashman paid the Chicago White Sox this spring for the
veteran catcher Chris Stewart, who is now with Class AAA
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. For Stewart, Cashman paid $1. “Some people get
cute and send 100 pennies,” Cashman said. “I don’t have time for cute.”
Veras,
Nick Swisher has a tattoo guy in Atlanta – because, really, what modern
athlete doesn’t? — and he inked Phil Hughes and Swisher after Tuesday’s
game. Hughes chose the Bible verse Philippians 4:13 as a birthday gift to
himself, and Swisher got the final verse of the famous “Footprints” poem.
Both players had the script written on the inside of their left upper arms.
Old friend Colter Bean showed up in the clubhouse after the game. Bean,
a Class AAA legend who pitched in six games for the Yankees from 2005 to
2007, drove from his home in Birmingham, Ala., to see old teammates and
friends. He is retired from baseball but said he hopes to work someday as
a coach or a scout.
