I thought considering his recent promotion that it would be appropriate to
look at Wilkins de la Rosa. I'm fairly sure that it's spelled that way, even
though it has been seen from various sources as Wilkin and de la Rossa.
De la Rosa was signed out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Repulic, but was signed
as an outfielder. Despite reaching as high as Charleston, he could not hit,
as shown by his .232 career average and .621 OPS.
In 2005 the Yankees converted him to a pitcher and he has really shined since
then. He started off as a 22-year old relief pitcher in the Gulf Coast
League and was promoted to Charleston in 2008. After several impressive
performances as a reliever the Yankees converted him once more, this time to
a starting pitcher.
He really was risen in the Yankees' eyes since then; he really destroyed
Low-A ball in 『08 in his limited time. In 90.1 innings he had a 2.29 ERA,
1.10 WHIP, only 60 hits, 110 strikeouts, but an okay 3.99 BB/9. He would be
promoted towards the end of the minor league season to High-A where he would
allow only 2 ER in 16.1 innings.
Despite the fact he had only been a pitcher for two seasons, he had to be
added to the 40-man roster this offseason to avoid being Rule V draft
eligible.
This year he started at Tampa again (late due to injury though.) After
breezing through them again (1.29 ERA in 3 starts) he was once again promoted
to Double-A, where he has made two starts.
Although it has been a small sample size, he has increased his K-rate thus
far (33 in 25 innings) and decreased his walk-rate thus far (8 walks in 25
innings.)
Want a scouting report, eh? John Sickels has one:
De la Rosa has a 90-94 MPH fastball and has already developed an above
average changeup. His slider is below average right now, but he's athletic
and has good pitching aptitude, so it's expected the breaking ball will
improve in time. I like de la Rosa's fresh arm and ability to push the radar.
Oh, he throws with his left hand, so he should be around forever. Here are
his career numbers.
