1. Johnny Damon (LF) (左打)
2. Derek Jeter (SS)
3. Bobby Abreu (RF) (左打)
4. Alex Rodriguez (3B)
5. Jorge Posada (catcher) (左右開攻)
6. Hideki Matsui (DH) (左打)
7. Robinson Cano (2B) (左打)
8. Melky Cabrera (CF) (左右開攻)
9. Doug Mientkiewicz (1B) (左打)
Sabathia
Sabathia
Although C.C. Sabathia of the Cleveland Indians is one of basebal's best
lefthanded pitchers with a record of 19-7 and an earned run average of 3.21,
manager Joe Torre of the Yankees said he felt comfortable using five
left-handed batters in his starting lineup against him on Thursday night when
the teams open the American League divisional series at Jacobs Field.
“He’s a horse, there’s no question," Torre said of Sabathia this
afternoon before the Yankees worked out here. “I was toying with messing
with the lineup, inserting a couple of right-handers. I just decided that
this group of guys, left-handed, right-handed, these are the guys that got us
there.’’
The lineup:
1. Johnny Damon (LF) (bats left)
2. Derek Jeter (SS)
3. Bobby Abreu (RF) (bats left)
4. Alex Rodriguez (3B)
5. Jorge Posada (catcher) (switch hitter)
6. Hideki Matsui (DH) (bats left)
7. Robinson Cano (2B) (bats left)
8. Melky Cabrera (CF) (switch hitter)
9. Doug Mientkiewicz (1B) (bats left)
Someone mentioned to Sabathia that two of the right-handed hitters, Alex
Rodriguez and Derek Jeter, have had success against him. Did he know,
Sabathia was asked, that Rodriguez is 7-for-17 against him and Jeter
12-for-22?
“I wasn’t aware of those numbers,’’ Sabathia said. “But I guess I’m
going to have to take them into account.’’
In discussing why he has become a better pitcher now that he is 27 years old
and in his seventh season, Sabathia mentioned age.
“I just think just getting older, being more mature,’’ Sabathia said. “In
the past, I was real emotional. I let my emotions get to me. The umpire
making a bad call would affect the way I threw the next pitch and things like
that. I let it all go and focus on what I can focus on.’’
Eric Wedge, the Cleveland manager, was asked what makes Sabathia so tough on
left-handed hitters. “he’s come a long way. C.C. is a different pitcher now
than he was three or four years ago . . . he tweaks this and he tweaks that
and continues to get better . . . he does a great job of just commanding the
baseball game.’’
Sabathia last faced the Yankees on Sept. 1, 2004 in Yankee Stadium and took
the defeat in a 5-3 result. In his career against the Yankees, he is 1-7 with
an ERA of 7.13.
