With Playoffs Ahead, It’s Not Easy Being Andy Phillips

Louisville
When the Yankees held their playoff shares meeting yesterday, deciding how
much of the winner’s pot they should give to players who spent less than the
full season on the roster, Andy Phillips milled about in the clubhouse.
That surprised me for a moment, because my instincts tell me Phillips is
always around. He was a full-season Yankee in 2006, after all, and it is easy
to forget he spent the first two and a half months of this season in Class
AAA. Josh Phelps, you will recall, was the first baseman on opening day.
I went over and chatted with Andy, as friendly a major leaguer as you will
meet, and a representative from Louisville Slugger came by to ask for his bat
order for the playoffs. Phillips, who broke his wrist on Sept. 2, politely
told him that he was injured and did not need any new bats.
“Well, maybe just in case?” the guy asked.
“No, thanks,” Phillips said. “I’m just a cheerleader now. Maybe if you
make wooden pompoms.”
He smiled as he said it, but you could tell it is not easy being Andy
Phillips right now. He batted .292 and played terrific defense, holding down
first base as the Yankees clawed back to contention this summer. Now they are
headed to the playoffs, and he is hurt.
Injuries happen all the time, of course, but given Phillips’ long climb
through the minors -– plus his personal ordeal, with his wife overcoming
cancer and his mother recovering from a serious car crash -– he is a
sympathetic figure. He seemed a bit subdued in the Champagne celebration on
Wednesday, as you might expect.
But Phillips’ injury, at least, has cleared the way for Doug Mientkiewicz to
shine. He has hit .455 since Phillips’ injury, making up for a lost summer
after his own wrist injury in early June. Mientkiewicz -– not Phillips -–
has become indispensable to Manager Joe Torre.
“I’ve been taking each at-bat like it’s a playoff at-bat for the last two
weeks, because I know that I have to keep my name fresh in Joe’s mind,”
Mientkiewicz said. “He’s given me the opportunity to go out there and play,
and I owe it to him to be successful every time.”
