Rookie feels at home Kennedy plays it cool in winning major-league debut Sunday, September 02, 2007 BY ALEX DELANIAN Star-Ledger Staff Because he knows he wouldn't get any hugs if there is a conflict of interest. "That's too far ahead," Kennedy said. "I know Allie would kill me, though." NEW YORK -- It would be difficult for Ian Kennedy not to feel at home around his new team. When he arrived in the Bronx earlier in the week, friend and fellow rookie Joba Chamberlain sneaked up from behind, wrapped his arms around Kennedy and planted a kiss on his cheek. After his seven-inning debut, the fans gave Kennedy a standing ovation and pitching coach Ron Guidry was waiting on the dugout steps to give him a hug of his own. Kennedy gave up five hits and three runs (one earned) and struck out six for his first major-league victory, a 9-6 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After the game, Kennedy walked out of the clubhouse through a series of claustrophobic hallways and into the lobby of Yankee Stadium. Waiting there were family, friends, grandparents on both sides and the one person he actually wanted a hug from, his fiancee, Allison Jaskowiak. There was an awkward moment where people didn't know whether to cheer, clap, or just maintain their goofy smiles. They were all waiting for someone else to take the lead, to say the right thing at a grand moment that one young man would cherish forever. Finally, an older man broke the ice. "Who's that guy?" he said. He's a Huntington Beach, Calif., native who felt perfectly comfortable on the East Coast. The stadium's radar gun said his first pitch clocked in at 96 miles per hour, a slight home-court advantage. "It was probably right," said Kennedy, lying through his teeth. He even heard the same music he was used to, although Metallica's "Enter Sandman" is considered Mariano Rivera's music in Yankee Stadium, it's also the song Kennedy warmed up to while pitching in college. And, of course, he had the most comforting person of all cheering him on. Jaskowiak, affectionately known as Allie, is a women's basketball player at the University of Southern California, where Kennedy went to school. She booked a ticket for New York the second she heard news of the promotion. Kennedy is a pitcher often praised for his poise on the mound, rarely rattled in tough situations. After a 36-pitch second inning where he gave up two unearned runs, he settled down considerably and turned in a much-needed quality start for the Yankees. That calm demeanor may be a result of Jaskowiak doing enough nail-biting for the two of them. Before the game, she was far from shocked when told that Kennedy said he wasn't particularly nervous for his first major-league start. "I know, right, how does that work?" she said. Kennedy's head coach at USC, Mike Gillespie, found him pitching for La Quinta High School almost by accident. He was at a game to scout another player but was blown away by the kid pitching with tremendous poise and wondered how he could've missed him. Gillespie's discovery is the same one the Yankees are making right now. Back then, he was just a freshman. Now, he's just a 22-year-old kid who fast-tracked through every level of minor-league baseball. He's a pitcher and person who always seems to be ahead of the curve. "The kid was as cool as can be," manager Joe Torre said. "He just seemed very prepared to pitch this game." And while Kennedy kept calm during the game, he wasn't shy about soaking in the moment afterward. "It's a dream come true, you see the Stadium on TV and see pitchers out there all the time and you wish and hope to be out there like all those guys," Kennedy said. "I got the chills; everyone came up and shook my hand. It came out great, that's what I was hoping for." Success, however, is a double-edged sword for Kennedy. If he continues to pitch well, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has said there is a possibility he could stay with the team. If the Yankees make the playoffs, and Kennedy is on the playoff roster, he may have a scheduling conflict. He and Jaskowiak are set to be married on October 6, which would coincide with the league's playoff schedule. The American League Division Series games are scheduled for the surrounding days, Oct. 5 and 7, setting the scene for a rushed and abrupt travel arrangement. It's a situation Kennedy doesn't even want to consider at this point, content to focus on the highs of his major-league debut. Because he knows he wouldn't get any hugs if there is a conflict of interest. "That's too far ahead," Kennedy said. "I know Allie would kill me, though."
