To date we have completed 104 consulting assignments in 51 countries. For a brief overview of the TGC program, please click on the following Web link: http://mba.tuck.dartmouth.edu/cib/tgc/index.html One of the Tuck teams will be in Taiwan for three weeks, from Monday 21 August through Friday 8 September. We will be working for Alcoa, the international aluminum and metals company. We will be staying in Taipei, but our work scope will probably have us traveling extensively in Taiwan, interviewing various companies involved in the project's value chain. The essence of the Alcoa project has to do with vacuum chambers used in thin film deposition systems for the semiconductor and LCD markets. Our task is learning all the details about the chambers used in this equipment in these markets, and then determine where and how a business case can be made for forged aluminum over currently used plate aluminum or stainless steel. We are interested in Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), and etching equipment. As for target companies, we are looking to interview and visit the following: * Major semiconductor and LCD fabs: Taiwan Semiconductor, United Microelectronics Corporation, Texas Instruments, AU Optronics, Chi Mei, and others. Also offices of chip makers: Intel, Samsung, etc. * Major vacuum system equipment makers: Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron Ltd, KLA Tencor, Lam Research, Novellus Systems, AKT, Brooks Automation, Jusung, and others. * Other vacuum equipment companies involved in such fields as optical storage, coatings, etc. (for example Unaxis). * Better understand the supply chain by speaking with metal distributors and perhaps metal machining shops. The team has already done a considerable amount of secondary research on the Alcoa project here in the U.S.. Our visit to Taiwan is to do primary research among the various companies and components in the semiconductor and liquid crystal display (LCD) supply chains. As is the case in so many of the Tuck Global Consultancy projects, the team is missing local cultural and language skills. What we have done so successfully in the past is to hire one or two graduate school students in the country where we are working. Our best success has been in hiring graduate business school students. "This is actually a great opportunity for Taiwanese students to interact with American students and to learn something themselves. Our experience with other countries is that the host country students find this tremendously worthwhile and enjoyable." I believe we will need two students for the 3 weeks we are in Taiwan, to help as full-time interpreters and participants in the project.
