These different cod5 tissues
were not found to contain significantly more calcium than the corresponding
tissues from wild-type. Based on this finding coupled
with the previous finding that cod5 and wild-type show similar
biomass accumulation [24] suggested that the cod5 plant was not
storing the “remobilized” calcium in the other tissues but rather
compensating, at least in part, for the loss in prismatic crystal formation
by reducing total calcium uptake by the roots. Although
other possibilities exist (e.g., change in total pod and seed number)
regulating calcium uptake at the roots is the simplest explanation.
In addition, oxalate measurements revealed that the cod5 pods
contained a higher than expected insoluble oxalate content when
compared to the insoluble oxalate content in its other tissues.
Microscopic inspections of the cod5 pods confirmed that the pods
were devoid of prismatic crystals. This inspection also revealed
that the cod5 pods were now accumulating a second crystal type
not observed in wild-type pods. These crystals were determined to
be druse crystals of calcium oxalate that were sparsely distributed
throughout the pod walls
