[ Graduate Research Assistantship, Purdue University (Soil and Environmental Chemistry )] My advisor, Dr. Cliff T. Johnston, is interested to have a graduate student from the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, National Taiwan University. This student will be offered a financial support (RA). Dr. Johnston obtained his Ph.D. under Dr. G. Sposito in UC-Riverside and had his post-doctor training in the Los Alamos National Lab. He is currently the associate professor of Soil and Environmental Chemistry, Purdue University. Our research program is focused on studying the surface chemistry of minerals at the molecular level. To study the surface chemistry of minerals we use a combined approach of spectroscopic (IR, Raman and NMR), structural and thermodynamic methods. In our lab, we have Infrared and Raman spectrometers, microcalrimeter and microbalance. We also have a workstation with Cerius 2 Program which is capable to perform molecular and crystal structure analysis and molecular dynamics and semi-empirical quantum chemistry calculation. Because of the outstanding Analytical Chemistry Program in Purdue University, we can also access some advanced instruments on the campus for our research. Our current main projects are 1. Nuclear Waste Management -Aluminum speciation in caustic alkaline solutions. 2. Surface Properties of Aluminum Containing Adjuvant (Cooperated with Dr. S. Hem in Pharmaceutical Industry) which characterizes the surface properties of adjuvants and studies the interaction of antigen with the surface of adjuvants in human vaccines. 3. Studies of heavy metals and organic molecules at mineral/water interfaces. The student can study for either MS or PhD degree. This RA position can start from the Fall semester of 1999 or Spring semester of 2000. If you are interested in applying for this position and graduate study in Purdue University, please contact me ( swang14@purdue.edu ) or Dr. Johnston (clays@purdue.edu, http://shadow.agry.purdue.edu/clay/cliff_home/johnston.html ) for further information.
