Group 1: What is the significance of Ruby and Jonathan’s profession? Group 2: Work out the chronology of the sections. What is the advantage of arranging them in the story’s order? Group 3: What important events in the 15 years are not described in the story? Why? Group 4: The author places much emphasis on the act of talking. Why is it so important? Group 5: In two places the protagonists refuse to talk: 1. to their children about their first attraction to each other, and 2. to each other about their first intimacy (p.202). Why? Group 6: Compare the reminiscence in this story to that in “Roman Fever.” How are the authors’ ideas of “memory” different? Group 7: The island on which Jonathan and Ruby meet and spend three weeks is recalled with great details and clarity, while the locations where they pass the next fifteen years are barely described. How does the author use setting to explore the workings of memory and desire? -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 112.104.90.15
