What kinds of effects do the five senses create in the story?
Group 2
Compare this story to the “journey to the underworld” of traditional
heroes, for instance the story of Orpheus. What similarities and
dissimilarities do you detect? What is the effect of evoking this convention?

Consider the time structure of the story. What effects does it create?
Group 4
What is the significance of entombing Fortunato in Montresor’s family vault?
Group 5
What does the story tell us about sanity and insanity, sobriety and
insobriety?
Group 6
Imagine telling the story from Fortunato’s first person point of view. What
kind of voice would he have? What different effects might this version
achieve?
Write a fragment of the story (200 words or so) from Fortunato’s viewpoint.
Group 7
What Gothic elements are used in the story? Try re-telling the story without
