Middlemarch的討論題目 (第4題)
這題是講setting反映人物心境的那題^^"
Setting is a very important part of George Eliot's techniques in constructing
and conveying the characters' inner world and the significance of their
situation to the reader albeit the characters themselves may not be aware
of it. The boudoir of Dorothea at Lowick Manor, for example, together with its
view outside the window, gives such an important setting in the novel. Discuss
how the boudoir is described first in chapter 9 (pp.69-73) and how the inside
is related to the outside, and then in chapter 28 (pp.256-9) how the same room
is seen differently by Dorothea and with what symbolic or important images the
narrator suggests the changed feeling of Dorothea, and how a mini-portrait
hung in it enhances an inner drama in Dorothea, which leads her to say, "Oh,
it was cruel to speak so! How sad-- how dreadful!"
