1. (33%) Price Discrimination:
a. (5%) Which of the following example is Price Discrimination? Please explain
the reason if it is not.
i. The price of hotel rooms with direct access to the beach is higher than
those without one.
ii. The seniors are charged half price when taking buses.
iii. Online shops charge higher prices for consumers overseas.
b. (3%) Please describe the three conditions for firms to price discriminate.
c. Calculating for the following textbook monopolist:
Suppose the monopoly could provide any level of output it wishes at a
constant MC of $5 per book. Assume that there are two different markets which
are separated by some distance. The demand curve in the first market is
given by
Q=55-P
And the curve in the second market is given by
Q=70-2P
i. (10%) If the monopoly can maintain the separation between the two markets,
what level of output should be produced in each market and what price
will prevail in each market? What is the total profit for the monopoly in
this case?
ii. (15%) What would happen if it costs consumers $5 to mail books between
the two markets? What would be the neew profit level for the monopolist
in this case? How about the case when mailing cost is zero?
2. (21%) General Equilibrium
James and Eve live in a small island near New York; the lsland is isolated
when the super hurricane "Sandy" strikes the east coast of the USA. They
only have two kinds of food in hand: taros and beef. Both of them have the
same amount of taros and beef in the initial endowment. However, Eve is a
vegetarian while James is a meat eater.
a. (3%) Please explain the meaning of "Pareto Efficiency".
b. (3%) What is "Pareto Improvement"?
c. (5%) Please depict James and Eve's indifference curves in the spearate
figures with taros in the horizontal axis and beef in the vertical axis.
d. (5%) Using Edgeworth Box, please depict James and Eve's initial endowment,
indifference curves passing through the endowment point, and figure out the
possible trading area.
e. (5%) Please show the "Contract Curve" (which could be one point) between
James and Eve in the Edgeworth Box.
3. (10%) Arrow's Impossibility
a. (5%) Please state the five principles of "Perfect Voting System".
b. (5%) What did the econimist Kenneth Arrow say about the "Perfect Voting
System"?
4. (20%) Suppose pigs (P) can be fed by corns (C) or soybeans (S). The
production function for raising pigs is P=2C+S.
a. (10%) Graph the isoquant map for P=20, P=40, and P=60. What is MRTS along
these isoquants?
b. (10%) If the prices of soybean and corn are both $1, what cost minimizing
combination of C and S should the pig farmer adopt for the three different
levels in (a)? What is the farmer's expansion path?
5. (16%) Suppose that there is a single labor market in which everyone is paid
the same wage.
a. (8%) Graph the market equilibrium.
