'In 1224, Frederick II founded the University of Naples...In the charter of
foudation he stated explicitly that it was his aim to train shrewd and inte-
lligent men for the imperial service, and he proceeded to set out, in the ma-
nner of a prospectus[學校的簡介、簡章], the advantages of the place. Naples,
he said , was a wealthy town, easily approached by sea and well furnished with
provisions[飲食供應] and halls of residence[學生宿舍]. "We keep the students
within view of their parents; we save them many lengthy and toilsome journeys;
we protect them from robbers. They used to be pillaged while travelling abroad,
but now, thanks to Our liberality[我 Frederick的慷慨], they may study at small
