Please write your answers in paragraph form; no outlines please. 1. What was the ‘Great Charter of 1838’, and what were the demands of the Chartist movement in Great Britain? What kind of sentiments among the British people in the 1830’s do you think this movement may reflect? 2. What do we mean by ‘the middle classes’? Describe some of the diversity of the middle classes (for instance, the ‘petty vs. the grande bourgeoisie). Who was considered (or considered themselves to be) a member of the middle class in 19th century Europe, and for what reasons? 3.Compare and contrast the role of the state in the early industrial development (1800-1850) of two major European Powers: Britain, France, Prussia and the German states. In what ways did governments, local or central, help set the necessary preconditions for and or aid directly in the growth of industrial development. 4.What were some of the characteristics of Poor Relief in Britain during the 19th century? How does this precedent compare with more modern policies of domestic social welfare and or international aid? 5. What is the significance of the rebuilding of Paris during the Second Empire? What improvements were made, and what effect did they have on daily life and social structure? 6. In 1861, Tsar Alexander II emancipated Russia's surfs. What were the motivations behind this reform, and what impact did it have on Russian society? 7. Describe the effects of rapid industrialization on the structure of the working-class family and especially the world of women’s work during the period of 1870-1914. 8. Compare and contrast the educational systems of England, France and Germany in the late 19th century. 9. What is the significance of the Russian Duma in the years leading up to the revolution of 1917? What were it's limitations (compared with other parliamentary bodies of the period)? 10.What impact did the rapidly changing nature of modern life around the turn of the century, including such phenomena as industrialization, urbanization, and alcohol and drug use, have on social scientists and philosophers.
