1. Chris Anderson, the author of 'The Long Tail', argued that the future of
businese and culture is not in hits(i.e. the popular seller), but in what used
to be considered as misses(i.e. the tail). According to Anderson, what causes
"the death of 80/20 law"? What are the three forces behind such a phenomenon?
Give your own critique of Andeson's theory, discuss what you agree and
disagree with him. (10 points)
2. Define 'cognitive authority.' What are the possible cues we as information
seekers can use to infer the 'cognitive authority' of information and
information source (e.g. a website, a scholarly journal, or a blog)?

3. Digital and internet technologies has brought enormous changes in the way
cultural products are created, received, and disseminated. Some of these
changes are documented in our readings: In "Books gone wild: the digital age
reshapes literature" the author talked about the potential impacts of digital
technology on how literature is created and disseminated. In "The
self-archiving initiative", Stevan Harnard, a pioneer and long time advocate
of "open access" movement in scholarly communication, sees the internet as a
potential solution to the moonopoly of scholarly information in the hands of
commercial journal publishers. In "The e-book, the e-reader, and the future
of reading" and "The future of reading", the authors disscussed how the
experience of reading might evolve with the growing populariry of e-book and
e-reader.
Based on these readings, explain the institutional and technological backdrops
of these recent events. Do you see a general trend underlying the
aforementioned phenomena? What do they have in common and what specific
institutional contexts separate them from each other? You are also yo assess
the feasibility of the solutions propsesd; comment specifically on issues that
might hinder their adoption. (15 points)
