Alex Volkov" Live Show! 讀書會內容如下: -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The first meeting will take place on Monday, November 26, from 4 pm to 6 pm, in the Center for General Education, room 208B. History of Science Reading Seminar We propose to begin a new activity for graduate and undergraduate students interested in History of Science: a Reading Seminar. The reason to open the Seminar is that students will be able to learn more about the field and to discuss the materials they read on regular basis. This activity will not be credited, and participation in the Seminar is on voluntary basis. Normally, two professors (Hsu and Volkov) will be present during the sessions to introduce reading materials and to moderate the discussions. We suggest that the work will concern four types of materials. 1. “Classics of Science.” This category includes the books written by the famous scientists and philosophers of the past, such as, for example, the works of Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Euclid, Newton, ancient and medieval Chinese authors, etc. In the most cases the reading will include the work with the translations (however, the original texts could also be used) and will include detailed discussions of the texts. 2. “Outstanding works on History and Philosophy of Science.” This category will include the influential works not included in the courses on History and History of Science. The examples here can be numerous. To give but one: the Tsing Hua classes often focus on the works of T. Kuhn, while ignoring other philosophers of science of the same calibre (for example, I. Lakatos). Some works (such as the classical work of B. Hessen on Newton’s Principia, or the book of Sokal) cannot be even found in Tsing Hua library. 3. “Unknown authors.” This is rather an experimental part of the program. We conjecture that there could be cases when the work of a historian or philosopher of science was not duly appreciated in his own time, and we can thus try to re-read her/his works in hope to find some interesting ideas. 4. “New publications.” When talking in Tsing Hua on November 12, 2007, Ian Hacking mentioned the work of R. Netz as one of the major contributions in the study on the Elements of Euclid. However, it is quite likely that not many of those present in the audience were aware what Hacking was talking about, since the recent Netz’s book on the shaping of deductive method has not been purchased by Tsing Hua’s library. So we would like to systematically discuss new publications (both books and articles) on the history and philosophy of science. -- They say the sea is cold, but the sea contains the hottest blood of all. ~Whales Weep Not (Quoted by William Shatner (Capt.
