^^^^^^ Nay, you are the gossiping woman, Allison. :)
For refreshing your memory, here comes the beginning of
the most tragic comedy -- Love Foes, Love Fools
Act One
[Apollia, a reasonable angel is visiting Padua with a sentimental angel,
Venusia. Allison and Hera are gossiping, while Mrs. William is coming.
There are bursts of laughter while the curtains are being drawn open.]
ALLISON Hey, Mrs. William. What a nice dress! Where did you buy it?
MRS. WILLIAM Surely. My husband brought it on his pilgrimage to Canterbury.
HERA Look at the fabric! It must cost your husband lots of pounds.
MRS WILLIAM You know, a woman is born to go with jewelry, silk, and diamonds.
A woman like me definitely deserves these things.
[She further shows off her necklace, rings, and other jewelry.]
ALLISON I so envy you. You are really the most blessed woman in Padua.
[At the same time, Benedick, Claudio, and John are coming in to join these
three women's chattering. They are all taking at the back of the stage.]
BENEDICK Good morrow, ladies. [He salutes to them.]
MRS WILLIAM Good morrow, young men. [Claudio and John salute to her.]
ALLISON Hey, here comes the shrew of Padua, Katherina. Everybody, hold your
breath.
HERA That's right. Don't look at her directly, or she will turn to into
stone!
[Katherina walks from the right end of the stage to the right.
Seeing them peeping at her, she steps heavily on the ground, stares at them,
and then walks on her way.]
ALLISON See, that's our notorious Kate, the cat that will scratch you all
over if you piss her off.
JOHN No, No. You don't need to piss her off before she scratches you all
over. [Laughing.]
CLAUDIO That's right, pal. She is the apple of her father's eye.
The SOUR apple!
HERA [To Benedick.] Oh, Benedick. You won't like that kind of woman,
will you?
BENEDICK I want to live longer, Hera. That shrew is above my head.
However, if she is Bianca, I will marry her and love her with all
my heart.
HERA [Sour grapes.] Bianca won't fall in love with a peasant like you.
ALLISON Hey, do you know Katherina's father is asking someone to marry Kate
before his second daughter, Bianca, to get married?
MRS WILLIAM It seems that both of them will be spinsters for the rest of
their lives.
[Hearing that, all of them laugh, for they know nobody will dare to pop the
question to Kate. Then, they continue their chatting about Katherina at the
back of the stage.]
APOLLIA See, the world is in chaos. People love to gossip, and this kind of
love is the very root of all the mess. For love begets hatred,
and hatred comes with jealousy and violence.
VENUSIA Quite contrary. It's love that makes man so charming.
Isn't God always proud of the invention of man, for they are really
unique.
