Henin-Hardenne To Sit Out San Diego; Targets Toronto Return

The U.S. Open Series will be without one of its primary players for much of
the next month. Stricken by a sore hamstring she sustained during her run to
the Roland Garros crown, Justine Henin-Hardenne will miss most of the U.S.
summer hard-court season. The 2003 U.S. Open champion plans to return to
tournament tennis on August 15th at the Tier I Rogers Cup in Toronto, which
will be her sole warm-up event for the U.S. Open.
The U.S. Open begins on August 29th. The seventh-ranked Belgian bypassed
grass-court tune-up tournaments in an effort to avoid aggravating her
hamstring injury. Henin-Hardenne was slowed by the injury in her 6-7, 6-2,
5-7 loss to Eleni Daniilidou in the first round of Wimbledon.
The four-time Grand Slam champion had hoped the hamstring would heal with
rest, but the fact that she is still feeling pain three weeks after her last
match prompted the 2003 Acura Classic champion to skip the San Diego
tournament, scheduled for August 1st-7th.
"We thought that would be enough to resume training progressively, but she's
in pain again," Henin-Hardenne's husband Pierre-Yves Hardenne said.
Currently engaged in light practice sessions in Monte Carlo, Henin-Hardenne
hopes to travel to Saddlebrook, Florida and practice for two weeks before
traveling to Toronto.
