Clijsters injury doubts
World number two Kim Clijsters has mounting fears a wrist injury may prevent
her from taking part in next month's French Open championships. At best, the
twice runner-up is worried she will not be fit enough to give her best at the
claycourt Grand Slam.
"I'm seriously worried about Roland Garros," Clijsters told Belgian newspaper
Het Laatste Nieuws on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old was forced to withdraw from Indian Wells tournament in
California last month after suffering the left wrist injury, and initially
thought she would be out for up to six weeks.
Earlier this week she told her website: "My wrist is still a bit stiff...
I want to have it rest as much as possible until Friday and then have a real
test.
"I'll decide only then about my Fed Cup participation. A decision doesn't
only deal with the weekend, but I shouldn't jeopardise any future tournament."
Clijsters is due to represent Belgium in this weekend's Fed Cup clash with
Croatia in her home-town of Bree.
"If I sense it's not working out, then I will listen to my own body and not
take any chances. Then I won't play, not even in my own home town of Bree,"
she told Wednesday's newspaper.
"And if I am not able to play this weekend, how long will it take before it
will work?" she added.
The beginning of Clijsters' season was also hampered by injury after she hurt
her left ankle just before the Australian Open.
The Belgian played through the pain and reached the final of the season's
first slam before losing to fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne.
The French Open runs from May 24 until June 6. Wimbledon begins on June 21.
