Clijsters' on crutches after ankle injury
PERTH, Australia (AFP) - The future of Belgium's Kim Clijsters remained
uncertain with Hopman Cup officials reporting she was on crutches after
suffering an ankle injury which forced her out of the event.
Clijsters hobbled off the court Wednesday in the third set of her match
against Australian Alicia Molik and was immediately sent for a precautionary
scan at a nearby hospital.
Tournament officials said Clijsters had been seen by a doctor again Thursday
morning and was resting in her hotel near the Burswood Dome where the event
is being played.
Tournament director Paul McNamee said he did not know what Clijsters' plans
were for competing in the Adidas International in Sydney starting on Sunday
or the Australian Open in Melbourne on January 19.
Tournament medical director Dr Peter Steel has diagnosed the condition as
bruising on the bone at the back of the ankle joint.
Clijsters' official website reported Thursday that the injury was serious
quoting the medical report as stating: "Because of the specific form of
strain there is a swelling as well as inflammation in the heel around the
back of the ankle joint".
It then stated: "Only if the swelling has diminished will it be clear what
really is the matter. Hopefully Kim will be able to lean on her foot after
a couple of days of resting, medication and physiotherapy".
Clijsters has not yet announced any plans to withdraw from either the Sydney
or Melbourne tournaments and McNamee said doctors were cautiously optimistic
she would make the Australian Open.
The Belgian world number two has yet to win a Grand Slam singles event.
