Abstract
I shall explain first why shrinkage procedure is becoming so popular and
important in modern statistics.
I then tackle the problem of constructing confidence intervals which are very
important in statistical inference. The new confidence interval for the mean
shrinks both the means and the variances. The interval has shorter length than
other intervals shrinking the means only, the variances only or nothings at
all.
The talk is related to my last year talk in this department. Last year was
about testing hypotheses and this talk is about confidence intervals,
which are harder. However the talk would focus on the main ideas and should
be enjoyable to listen to.
