幾天前一場大雨困我在捷運站癡等看看錶上的時間: 嗯得開始為家教學生上課了;有本事的老師隨處都是教材. 我問:"我們正在等雨停" 怎麼用英文說呢? 學生犯了最常見的中式英文思考邏輯: "We are waiting for the rain to stop." 道地的說法會是: We are waiting for the sky to clear up. 得注意喔! 以下便借題發揮說說rain這個字吧. 可怕的中式英文會把"看起來好像要下雨"說得很冗長...... To judge from the sky, it seems that it is going to rain.... 洗鍊的英文卻是: It looks like rain. 呆板的中式英文也可以吧"因雨延賽"說得異常冗長...... The match was put off because of the rain. 帥氣的英文則是: The match was rained off. 另外和各位說說一個高中程度的片語: rain or shine 拙筆殘腦(<-我)擅自把中文的"不見不散"翻成 Meet you-- rain or shine. 野人獻曝惠請賜教 ^^" 另外還有個實用且不失趣味的片語喔: take a rain-check (on sth.) 自己動手查查它吧很好用的! 生活實況: "Wanna tag along for a movie?" "No, but I will take a rain-check." 甚至也可以如此打趣地說: At least, Withsun's (這位正妹不知今天有來上課否?) reply is not an absolute refusal; it is a rain-check one. 能看出上句趣味何在者英文程度就挺棒的囉! 另外中文的"未雨綢繆" 就可以套用: for a rainy day E.g. I save money for a rainy day. 而常聽到的 It never rains but it pours. 乃意指: Everything starts to go wrong one after another. 順道提提為各位複習~ 等等眼前突然有位旅客(別忘了我還在捷運站陪學生等雨喔) 不顧雨勢滂沱 "冒著風雨衝出去了" (趕時間吧?) 令人搥胸頓足的中式英文又會來這套: The passenger worked up his courge to take a risk of running out in the pouring rain. 道地的英文: The passenger braved the elements. 嗯是該雨過天晴了下課吧 ^^ 噹~~ -- Anything worth doing is worth doing well. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.119.172.127
