摘要:This study explores the emergence, development, and disappearance
of classifiers in Mandarin Chinese by investigating the semantic change
involved in the grammaticalization of the 16 most commonly used modern
Chinese numeral classifiers. Historical evidence is provided to show that
four mechanisms - metaphor, metonymy, semantic reanalysis, and
(inter)subjectification - play important roles in the emergence and
development of classifier meaning while in the disappearance of classifiers,
loss of semantic function and high frequency have been shown to be major
contributing factors. It is argued that the evolution of numeral classifiers
from lexical meaning to grammatical meaning relies on the construction
in which the targeted lexeme is used and its relation with the elements
in the construction
