Still, some of the Hebrews' most important contributions to subsequent Western
religions crystallized during this period. One was a theology of Yahweh's
transcendence: the teaching that God is not part of nature but exists outside
of it. God can therefore be understood, in purely intellectual or abstract
terms, as entirely separate from the operations of the natural world.
Complementing this principle was the belief that Yahweh had appointed humans to
be the rulers of nature by divine mandate...Finally, Hebrew religious thought
was moving in this period toward the articulation of universal ethics─a
