Russ每場比賽都會戴著兩條腕帶(Wristband)，上面分別是"KB3"和"Why not?"
這兩條腕帶訴說著RUSS背後的故事

Lawndale，加州─RUSS和Khelcey Barrs一直都是分不開的好朋友，他們常常一起去打籃
球，還立志到了大學之後要再當隊友。
16歲的Barrs在2003的CIF Southern Section quarterfinals中表現優異，平均18分、11
籃板和3火鍋，成為了許多大學教練的焦點。當時身材條件比RUSS(5'8" 140磅)還要好的
Barrs(6'6" 200磅)收到了很多的獎學金的邀請(而給RUSS Offer的學校很少)，不過他們
認為那些事情到一年後再擔心，他們只想一起快樂的打球─RUSS在場上奔馳，Barrs緊緊
的跟在後面。
很不幸的，這個夢想並沒有實現。Barrs在L.A. Southwest College例行的pickup game中
突然虛脫暈了過去。不久之後，Centinela Hospital Medical Center宣布了Barrs已經離
開人世了。(他有心臟脹大的問題)
Barrs在禮拜二過世，過了四天之後在Grace United Methodist Church辦葬禮。RUSS這時
應該要街上跟Barrs打籃球，卻得參加他好朋友的葬禮。
RUSS不只在場上加倍努力，像是兩個人在打球一樣，在場下也做兩份家務事。他每週都會
幫忙住在對街的Barrs的祖母倒垃圾，就跟Khelcey一樣。
轉眼間RUSS長大成人，變成6呎2吋的熱門PG，各校獎學金的Offer接踵而來。最後RUSS挑了
原先看上Barrs而沒有看上RUSS的UCLA。
RUSS:"I feel like I'm playing for him in a way. We were playing pickup
basketball one day and he just stopped and fell and out of nowhere and that
was it. I always think about him and his family and I Wonder how they're doing
and check on them any chance I get."
RUSS一直都是一位很努力的球員，但是Barrs的事情觸動了他心中的那把火，燒得更加的
猛烈了。他親眼見到生命在一瞬間就會消逝。而他再也不要對於自己的能力產生質疑，他
想要成為這個星球上最厲害的PG。這對於這個小孩來說是一個遙不可及的夢想，更何況他
在高三前的暑假才接到第一個大學的徵召，而且在高三的中間才終於灌到籃的小孩。不過
當有任何人質疑RUSS時，他只會有很簡單的回應:
"Why not?"
"It's how I think, It's how I play and go about things. I say why not to
everything."

Sam Presti也一定會很想用這個座右銘。在零八年的選秀會上他竟然用第四順位挑RUSS。
此舉招來許多質疑聲浪，大家希望他挑Brook Lopez，或者是已經稍微養起來的後衛也好，
而不是在UCLA兩季以來每場平均僅有8.3分的RUSS。不過Presti知道自己在幹嘛，當他問
大家誰最難對付，大家的共識是RUSS。
RUSS在防守端的韌性和mid-range game都是在水泥地的Ross Snyder Park中看著他的爸爸
，Russell Westbrook Sr.打pick up game所學到的。而後來他們搬到南方十五理處的
Hawthorne之後RUSS才有了專屬的球場，在那邊可以跟爸爸花幾小時努力的練習，就像是
在學校練習一樣那麼努力。
"The cotton shot." Westbrook Sr.說道。
"You know about the cotton shot? From the 15-20 feet range is the cotton shot.
I'm supposed to hit that shot. That's my mid-range game." Westbrook Jr.這麼說。
Sr. : "If he had practice from 7 to 9 p.m., we would go shoot 9 to 11 p.m.,
We would shoot for hours and it was that extra effort that got him to where
he's at. It's something he wanted to do. I remember one Christmas he caught
me off-guard and said, 'Dad, let's go shoot.' He would want to shoot right
after we got home from church, too. That's all he wanted to do."
他的爸爸會讓他進行投籃練習，每次都得投個500球以上，如果在特定的點沒有連續進三顆
球還得加重練習。
雖然說RUSS的還不斷的練習 "cotton shot"還不斷的演出令人讚嘆的灌籃，仍有許多議題
圍繞在他在訪談時防衛心很重。
UCLA教練Reggie Morris:"Very few people take it personally when the guy they're
guarding scores, If you ever watch Russell when his guy scores, it's like a
direct slap in the face. You can see his whole demeanor kind of change. He gets
upset and he takes it personally when people score on him. He never takes a
play off, and that's why he's so hard to score against."

RUSS在Barrs過世後的努力態度幾乎沒有變，他總是第一個到場練習，而且是最後一個走
的。
RUSS: "I've always had to prove myself to people growing up, I had to show
them that I could do this and I could do that and paying no mind to what the
critics said. Just go in every day and work hard when other people are not."
很快的，RUSS證明他值得拿下第四順位。
"I remember everything that happened to me, Sitting on the bench in high school
, sitting on the bench in college; I remember all that. I'll never forget that
and that's what pushes me now to work hard and continue to outwork everyone
else every day."
每當RUSS低頭看看自己的手，他就會想起他不是只為了自己打球。他希望當你看到他灌籃
時，你也能看見KB3(Barrs的背號是三號)也在那裏。

"He was my best friend. He lived across the street from me and we were together
all the time. When he passed, it just made me think about life and how every
time I step on the floor I have to give it my all because every time he played
he gave 100 percent. You can't take life for granted. Every day when I get on
the floor I give it my all and play because you never know what tomorrow
holds."
