[外電] Who Will the Heat Draft?
The NBA Draft is only three days away, and the Miami Heat holds the 18th, 41st,
42nd and 48th picks. Keep in mind that Heat President Pat Riley would love to
trade James Jones’ unpalatable contract; his buyout deadline is June 30, so he
may be dealt on Draft Day along with Michael Beasley and possibly Daequan Cook.
At the end of Thursday night, Miami could have traded away all of its
selections in a trade or two. But assuming the Heat at least keeps its
first-round pick, some intriguing prospects emerge.
It is fine to think Miami will draft the best available player, but Riley may
approach this Draft differently than most. By now, Riley has settled into his
sole job as the man in charge of personnel decisions, and perhaps his talent
evaluation has improved with experience. He knows that he drafted Wayne Simien
over David Lee, Dorell Wright over Jameer Nelson, Cook over Glen Davis and
Beasley over O.J. Mayo and Brook Lopez. In the cases of Simien and Beasley,
both excelled in college. The selections of Wright and Cook appear to be
stretches in hindsight, but perhaps Riley thought Wright’s length and Cook’s
shooting were alluring. My perception is that Riley will take the player who
he feels the most comfortable with, not necessarily the player who is deemed
“best available” by college analysts.Riley will deal with a clean roster
Thursday, but we can presume that Miami will probably not draft a shooting
guard, with Riley hoping to re-sign Dwyane Wade and veteran Raja Bell
expressing his desire to play for the Heat. Miami may also be leery to the idea
of drafting a point guard, especially considering Mario Chalmers is under
contract for next season and the Heat drafted Pat Beverley, who played last
season in Greece, in 2009. A small forward could be useful with Dorell Wright
and Quentin Richardson testing the free agent waters. A backup power forward
or center could also be in order, with Jermaine O'Neal and Udonis Haslem likely
to ask for contracts out of the Heat's price range.
Miami looked at Patrick Patterson, and he may be a great fit if he falls from
his projected lottery range to No. 18. At 6-foot-9 and 240 pounds, he has good
size for a power forward and could be utilized as a backup to Amar'e Stoudemire
, who I expect Riley to sign along with Wade this July. He worked well in the
post and has also developed an outside shot, containing everything from the
baby-hook shot to a catch-and-shoot three-pointer in his repertoire. He may
develop into someone with an offensive game similar to Rasheed Wallace, which
could become useful if Stoudemire begins to decline, but he will probably be
gone by Miami's selection.
Riley also took time to observe Hassan Whiteside, and he would also be a good
pick. He is one of the few centers in this Draft that has showcased offensive
capabilities outside of DeMarcus Cousins. He averaged 13 points per game on 52
percent shooting from the field in his lone season at Marshall and he scored 20
points on three occasions. He also swatted five shots per game, leading the
NCAA while also grabbing almost nine rebounds nightly. Joel Anthony has not
officially decided whether or not to opt out of his player option for the 2010-
11 season, and Whiteside could fit in well if Anthony opts out and asks for
more than the $1.2 million the 18th selection in this Draft will receive.
Among small forwards, Miami may draft Gordon Hayward. The 6-foot-9 small
forward out of Butler has drawn comparisons to Mike Dunleavy Jr. and Jason
Kapono from his Heat days. Kapono brought life to an otherwise dreary 2006-07
season and developed great chemistry with Wade that year. With Richardson and
Wright, who provided long distance shooting last year, in free agency, Miami
may want to draft a shooter. Although Hayward shot just 29 percent from
downtown this year, he shot 45 percent from distance during his freshman year.
Hayward struggled when defenses started contesting more of his shots, but he
will be able to connect when he receives open looks from Wade's penetration.
If Beverley's performance overseas hasn't impressed Riley, he may be bold and
draft Eric Bledsoe. He possesses toughness Riley desires, drives to the basket
very well and also shot 38 percent from downtown. At 18, he would be a stretch,
but Riley may want to go with the player he feels comfortable with. Bledsoe
also played the two guard in college to accomodate John Wall in Kentucky, so
he may be too high of a risk on a team that aims to win a championship next
year.
My best guess as to what happens on Draft Night? With Whiteside and Patterson
gone, Miami selects Hayward, but trades Cook, Jones and Beasley and its second-
round picks for cap space. Evidently, Riley is attempting to fill the roster
with three stars and minimum salary contracts.
