HOUSTON -- Toronto Raptors center Jermaine O'Neal reportedly believes he will soon be traded to Miami. Heat forward Shawn Marion isn't sure how long he will remain in South Florida once the team finishes its seven-game trip that ends Sunday against Oklahoma City. The one certainty in the equation Saturday was that the Heat continued to explore trade options with Toronto and at least two other teams on potential deals that could lead to Marion's departure in advance of the league's Feb. 19 trading deadline. League sources directly involved with the Heat and Raptors confirmed Saturday that the teams are discussing a deal that would send Marion and reserve guard Marcus Banks to Toronto for O'Neal. The balance of Marion's stay in Miami could be determined by the stability of O'Neal's chronically sore right knee, which has required at least one surgery and kept him out of nine games before he returned to the lineup Friday. After breaking his recent silence on Friday regarding the constant trade rumors, Marion said Saturday said his focus remains on helping the Heat close out what is shaping up to be a successful seven-game trip. The Heat (21-17) is 3-2 on the trip, with games remaining Saturday against Houston and Sunday against Oklahoma City. ''We put in a couple of more things [offensively] for me for this game,'' Marion said Saturday morning. ``I'm just trying to help this team, man.'' A Marion-for-O'Neal swap carries risks and potential rewards for both the Raptors and Heat, teams that want to stay in playoff contention now but are also intent on creating salary-cap space for the summer of 2010. That's when Toronto's Chris Bosh and Miami's Dwyane Wade could opt for free agency. Marion, 30, is in the final season of contract that pays him $17.8 million this season and would be looking for an extension from just about any new team. O'Neal, 30, earns $21 million this season and is due $23 million next season. Banks, set to earn $4 million each of the next two seasons, would be included in the deal for overall salary-matching purposes. O'Neal maintains an offseason residence in Miami and has averaged 13.6 points and 7.2 rebounds for the disappointing Raptors (16-25). If the trade goes through, Marion and Banks would be reunited with Raptors general manager Brian Colangelo, who was in the same role in Phoenix when both players were with the Suns. Marion and Banks were traded to Miami last season -- after Colangelo's departure -- in exchange for Shaquille O'Neal. While the Heat would be getting the low-post presence it covets, the Raptors would get one of the league's most durable players in Marion, who would fit Toronto's up-tempo playing style. Banks would give Toronto another option at point guard, a position that has been beset by injuries and inconsistent play.
