Fight Fans, Get Ready for Thatcher vs. Nobbs
Do we have a diva showdown on our hands? Next week awards-o-philes will have a
difficult choice between “The Iron Lady” (Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher)
and “Albert Nobbs” (Glenn Close as a woman passing as a male butler in
Victorian Dublin), whose premieres and splashy afterparties are scheduled for
the same night. (Never fear, the Bagger will miraculously figure out a way to
be in both places at once.)
The face-off began this week, when both films had screenings on Tuesday. Both
also featured Q&As afterward, though Ms. Streep’s was streamed online, and
Ms. Close’s was confined to her theater.
Joined by Phyllida Lloyd, the director of “The Iron Lady,” Ms. Streep
discussed their collaboration – they also worked on “Mamma Mia!” – and the
British view of Ms. Thatcher. The Q&A, which allowed viewers in the theater and
online to ask questions, was heavily advertised online, but viewership was
fairly low.
Meanwhile, across town, Ms. Close was joined by Patrizia Von Brandenstein, the
production designer of her film. They discussed the project, which Ms. Close
has been trying to bring to the screen for years. “I had the rights to it
until it went into public domain, “ she said, adding: “It was a hard sell.
And my definition of an independent film is a movie that almost doesn’t get
made. It tests everyone who believes in it.”
Both women are considered best actress hopefuls in roles that were tough to
pull off, involving layers of make-up – Ms. Close spent two hours daily
getting her nose reshaped and her ears enlarged; see Ms. Streep’s aging look
here — and bringing complex motivations to the screen. And both Ms. Streep and
Ms. Close are, of course, consummate professionals, actors of the highest
caliber, with many awards to their credit. Still, if there were say, a blonde
thespian cagematch, how would you call it?

been nominated for an Oscar five times but has not won any Academy Awards.
