You’d think by this point Meryl Streep would have accomplished every possible
feat in her professional life. But early on Monday afternoon, Ms.Streep added
one or two more. She was a trending topic on Twitter (at least in New York),
off the news of another first: her first Vogue cover, at age 62. Photographed
by Annie Leibovitz, she’s sitting in the surf on a beach and later “striding
through a crop of organic broccoli sustainably farmed”in upstate New York,
according to the accompanying story. In it, she talks about feminism, politics
and campaigning for a National Women’s History Museum, for which she donated
$1 million.
“The Iron Lady,” in which she plays Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher of
Britain, appealed to her because it ricochets around many of the themes she’s
long been interested in. she tells the writer, Vicki Woods. “Women and power
and diminishment of power and loss of power,” she said. “And reconciliation
with your life when you come to a point when you’ve lived most of it and it’s
behind you. I have always liked and been intrigued by older people, and the
idea that behind them lives every human trauma, drama, glory, jokes, love.”
Ms. Streep may be the oldest person to have ever graced Vogue’s cover —
until, perhaps, Glenn Close one-ups her.
