[外電] Report: Dirk Nowitzki rebuffs max payd

Dirk Nowitzki said all he was looking for was a little respect when it came
to his free-agent contract.
Nowitzki already was going to take a steep pay cut, but when he formally
signed his new, three-year contract Tuesday, it was for even less than
advertised. He was expected to get a deal worth about $30 million over the
life of the contract.
Instead, it’s closer to $25-million for three years, a further reduction
that helped facilitate the Mavericks’ $46-million offer sheet that netted
them Chandler Parsons. It may also help them funnel a couple extra dollars to
Devin Harris and perhaps DeJuan Blair.
Nowitzki will be the fourth-highest paid Maverick on this season’s roster –
behind Parsons, Tyson Chandler and Monta Ellis.
He’s doing it all in the name of rebuilding a title contender.
Nowitzki quickly went to his Twitter account to simply say: “MFFL.”
Mavs Fan For Life.
The contract was made even more unique because an ESPN report said two teams
– Houston and the Los Angeles Lakers – made near-maximum offers to Nowitzki
early in free agency but he didn’t even give those teams an audience. And
other teams inquired about Nowitzki, too.
His heart never left Dallas. This is where it’s been since he got here in
1998.
“You can count guys like Dirk on one or two fingers,” president of
basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. “We’re so lucky to have him. He’
s a winner.”
And is clearly willing to sacrifice in the name of winning.
While it’s easy to look at the slightly more than $200-million Nowitzki has
made from the Mavericks in his 16 seasons and say that it’s easy to give a
hometown discount when you’ve hit the lottery to that extent.
But he signed in 2010 for $80-million over four years. That was $16-million
less than the maximum he could have received.
Now, he’s signing for three years and $25-million, when he could have had an
offer in the range of the Parsons offer sheet.
No matter how you slice it, he values winning as the ultimate payoff, not
squeezing every dollar out of Mark Cuban.
