Milwaukee’s lightning-bolt of a point guard, Brandon Jennings, is heading into restricted free-agency after this season. He’s established himself as one of the best scoring point guards in the league, averaging 18.9 points and 6.1 assists per game. He’s the kind of young (23 years old) talent that the Mavericks might covet with their pile of free-agent cash to spend this summer. If so, the feeling seems to be mutual. “Yeah, of course,” Jennings said when asked if he could see himself fitting in Dallas. “You’ve got Dirk Nowitzki, you’ve got O.J. Mayo, Elton Brand, Chris Kaman. “Who wouldn’t want to play in an environment like this every night? You’ve got an owner who’s so into his team and everything like that. Every time you see the Mavs, you see him cheering or going crazy. They won a championship. They’re about winning.” While it remains to be seen whether Mayo, Brand and Kaman return for the Mavericks’ future, Nowitzki is a given. And Jennings said he’s let himself think about running the pick-and-roll, one of his specialties, with the Mavericks’ future hall of famer. “That would be crazy,” Jennings said. “At the end of the season, we’ll just see what happens. As far as right now, I’m just trying to help this team get to the playoffs and win basketball games.” Since Jennings is just finishing his rookie-scale contract, the Bucks have the right to match any offer that he agrees to. Jennings said the only mark against his game – a .395 career shooting percentage (.403 this season) – is a product of him having to take so many shots for the Bucks. “There might be times that I do take crazy shots or shots that I have to take because the shot clock is low or things like that,” he said. “But since the All-Star break, I’ve been really conscious of trying to take good shots and just take shots that are going to help the team. Now that we’ve got a couple of trades in, I feel like I probably don’t have to take too many crazy shots any more.” And, of course, if he were paired with other players who could take some pressure off him to have to be the No. 1 option, it wouldn’t hurt, either. It’s clear that the Mavericks have a fascination with Jennings. His name came up as one of the Mavericks’ potential targets before the trade deadline. “I just like his dynamic athleticism, his ability to get on big rolls,” coach Rick Carlisle said about Jennings’ game, responding to a general question about what makes the point guard so tough. “A couple of games ago, he made his first nine shots against Brooklyn, or something like that. He’s an aggressive attacker, and he’s very difficult to guard because he can both get into the paint and kill you there, and then if you want to go under screens, he can jump up and knock down four or five threes in a row.
