Does Deron Williams leave NJ this summer? Chad Ford: Probably. The only
scenario where he doesn't is if the Nets swing a deal for Dwight Howard at
the trade deadline. At that point, I think Williams hangs around. If that
doesn't happen, I think Williams will join Dwight Howard (assuming he's not
traded to the Lakers in March) in Dallas next summer. Lots of signals
pointing to this being the preferred outcome for both players. ESPN.com
Most of the talk about the Nets' future has centered on their desire to get
Dwight Howard, who would team with Williams as a formidable 1 -2 punch as the
franchise moves to Brooklyn. There has been less said about the future of the
player the Nets already have. One person in the Nets organization who is not
directly connected to negotiations with Williams offered his opinion on the
star's intentions, saying he doesn't think there's any chance the guard stays
with New Jersey. He also thought the team would be wise to come to grips with
that and trade him before the March 15 deadline. ESPN.com
Would Williams want to go home? Williams also is presumed to be interested in
Dallas because he's from the area. He went to high school in The Colony, a
Dallas suburb, which is also home to Pizza Hut's national headquarters. While
going home can be problematic (see Stephon Marbury, Kenny Anderson), it is
supposedly a major lure for Williams. With Kidd's deal expiring, Williams
would seem to be a seamless fit at the point guard position. ESPN.com
But the Nets hope it won’t be long before the two of them, who will play
together this weekend for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star Game in
Orlando, are playing together for the Nets. The pair would form arguably the
best inside-outside combination in the NBA, and give the franchise a dynamic
pair of stars to take the franchise across the Hudson to Brooklyn next
season. “It’ll be interesting to see how the fans are going to react,”
Williams said after Monday’s 100-92 win over the Knicks at the Garden. “It
should be pretty crazy. … I kind of look forward to the game. “I like
playing against him. It should be fun.” New York Post
Unlike other former free agents such as LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, or
a current one such as Dwight Howard, Williams isn’t allowing a circus
atmosphere to surround his potential exit. He’s just been about playing, not
giving any updates on potential suitors. Williams is averaging a career high
22.2 points along with 8.2 assists and 4.1 turnovers. The last figure is a
byproduct of sometimes attempting to do too much on a team short on talent. “
He’s been great in this situation,” a Nets official said. “He understands
the situation but it’s been tough and he’s has continued to play great and
lead a good example.” HoopsHype
Yet to Williams credit there has been no bad body language. He has earned his
third All-Star Game appearance and it’s on merit. The victory improved the
Nets record to 10-24, putting a band-aid on a festering wound that this
losing season has become. “I’m learning to fight through things and trying
to lead guys even though it’s not the best situation all the time,”
Williams said. “We are playing better as it goes and learning how to play
and developing guys.” And so Williams tries to put a positive spin. “So it’
s still a fun process he says,” not so convincingly. “I just hope it’s not
an extended process.” HoopsHype
