[外電] Mavericks falter late, lose to Magic, 117-107
Saturday, January 8, 2011
By EDDIE SEFKO / The Dallas Morning News
The Mavericks are having a little trouble with staying power these days –
at least in terms of being able to focus and execute with games on the line.
They aren't having any trouble with passion, at least not judging from the
flurry of technical fouls in the fourth quarter Saturday night. But
redirecting some of that venom might be needed.
The Mavericks lost a double-digit lead for the second game in a row – this
time a 16-point advantage – and were hammered in the fourth quarter as
Orlando rolled to a 117-107 victory at American Airlines Center.
Rick Carlisle was ejected in the fourth quarter. Tyson Chandler fouled out
and got a technical when he did. Essentially, the Mavericks wilted at the
wrong time. The Magic went on a 26-3 run in the fourth quarter to go ahead,
108-88, and the drama was over.
The Mavericks fell to 2-5 since Dirk Nowitzki's injury, and it has gotten so
bad they can't even stop a streaking team. Orlando won for the ninth
consecutive time. The Magic has not lost since the Mavericks won in Orlando
on Oct. 21.
The Magic avoided joining Boston (five-game streak), New Orleans
(eight), Oklahoma City (five), San Antonio (12), Utah (seven) and Miami (12)
as teams that have had winning streaks of five games or longer wiped off the
board by the Mavericks.
Hedo Turkoglu, revitalized after returning to Orlando in a trade from
Phoenix, had a career-best 17 assists, and the Magic used a well-rounded
attack to run down the Mavericks, who were up 50-34 late in the second
quarter, but saw that advantage down to six by halftime and gone completely
in the third quarter.
"They hit us with a barrage that we couldn't handle," said Carlisle, who was
tossed with 6:06 left and vented his anger on a trash can after leaving the
court through a hallway. "We're not going to be an excuse team. I didn't like
the officiating, obviously, but that's as much as I'm going to say about it.
Calls you disagree with are a reality in this league. When you disagree a
lot, you get thrown out of the game."
The Mavericks got 24 points from DeShawn Stevenson, 18 from Shawn Marion
and 16 from Jason Terry. But there wasn't enough consistency at either end of
the court to make a push.
And 17 turnovers – seven in the third quarter – didn't help.
"We never adjusted to what they were doing to us, and it cost us," Terry
said. "They ran the same play like 30 times in a row.
"It's a tough loss for us. Our problem all year long is having a lead and not
being able to sustain it and put a team away. If we're going to be the team
we say we want to be, regardless of who's in uniform, when you get a lead,
you got to do something about it. Until we address it, we'll be sitting here
with a sad face."

To three, or not to three: DeShawn Stevenson hit three 3-point shots in the
first quarter Saturday night before missing, adding to his reputation as one
of the best in the league at nailing the long ball.
So will he listen if the NBA comes calling to ask him to participate in the
3-point shootout at All-Star Weekend?
"Nah, I don't want to mess up my rhythm," Stevenson said. "If you go out
there and only make two, then you might lose your rhythm."
There's still time for Stevenson to change his mind. He came into Saturday's
game fourth in the league at 46.6 percent.
