– sounds like a successful beginning. But with Wednesday's awful third
quarter in New Orleans still fresh in his head, coach Rick Carlisle is in no
mood for sunshine and daffodils. His critique of the Mavericks couldn't zero
in on anything other than what he saw in a 12-minute meltdown that sabotaged
what was otherwise a strong effort.

"I think it sucks."

And with that, it became clear that the Mavericks have plenty of work in
front of them. Carlisle must again re-configure playing rotations with Butler
back in the lineup. Beaubois, when he returns, will force another adjustment.

The defense has been commendable much of the time, but when it's been bad –
like that third quarter, when the Hornets shot 72 percent and forced seven

"We identify defense as the No. 1 variable to us being a true contending
team," Carlisle said. "We're fourth in the league in points per possession.

Do the Mavericks like playing defense?
"If the answer is yes, then we're making some real progress," he said. "If

Butler doesn't have to do it all: In his first game returning from back
trouble, Butler appeared to be trying to do too much, something Carlisle
cautions against.

who can have a physical presence around the basket. When we play zone, we
