[外電] Mavericks' Dominique Jones learns from his former Orland

ORLANDO, Fla. – As a young teenager growing up in Lake Wales, Fla.,
Dominique Jones was an Orlando Magic fan and his favorite player was Darrell
Armstrong.
"Everybody liked the Magic and he was the point guard," Jones said. "I went
to one game and he held onto the rim too long on a dunk and fell on his head."
Armstrong didn't need to be reminded.
"Against Sacramento," he said without hesitation.
As the years went by and Armstrong parted ways with the Magic – eventually
playing for the Mavericks, among other teams – Jones became less of a Magic
fan but always followed Armstrong. Little did he know that a few years later
he'd be learning from his one-time idol, now a Mavericks assistant.
Tonight, Jones will be in front of family and friends as the Mavericks play
the Magic at the new Amway Center. Lake Wales is about 45 minutes south of
Orlando, and Jones figured he was going to have to start with 20 tickets for
family and friends and then count up from there.
"It's going to be fun, on the court and off," Jones said. "I haven't been
home in a long time. It's still a business approach. But you try to see your
family and people you haven't seen in a long time. I got a lot to do while
I'm there."
It wouldn't be surprising to see coach Rick Carlisle start Jones in the
return to his stamping grounds. The revolving door at shooting guard has
shown no sign of stopping.
Either way, Jones figures to get a good run in front of the home folks – not
because Carlisle has a soft touch for such nostalgia but because the rookie
has earned it.
He's a solid member of the playing rotation at this point. He still has
plenty to learn. But the Mavericks can't ignore Jones' abilities.
"He's made constant, steady improvement," Carlisle said. "There's going to be
highs and lows, but I haven't had many guys in this league at the two
position [shooting guard] that handle the ball as much as he does."
At this point, one of the big questions about Jones is how he slipped by 24
NBA teams drafting before he was taken.
"We feel our scouting staff is excellent," Carlisle said. "They see things in
players that maybe other clubs don't. And our personnel situation is going to
be different than teams picking above us. A piece to our puzzle may not be as
important to another team in their situation."
Armstrong, who is in Jones' ear virtually all the time in practices, sees a
little of himself in the 6-5 guard. But Jones confesses there is one aspect
of Armstrong's career that he doesn't have any desire to emulate.
"I don't take charges," Jones said.
Armstrong, of course, was the best charge-taker in the league during his
prime.
"He's got to learn how to take charges," Armstrong said. "I think he took one
in summer camp. That might have been the one that hurt his feelings and he
said, 'I don't take charges.'
"He might not know how to do it, but that's another something I got to teach
him."
And as for Armstrong feeling old because a youngster who used to be one of
his biggest fans now is trying to start an NBA career, he can deal with it.
"It's good to have a young fellow like that, somebody who saw how hard I
played the game and the strides I made," Armstrong said. "He's doing the same
thing."
Briefly: The Magic brings a 6-0 preseason record into tonight's meeting. Its
average margin of victory is 25 points, including 33.5 points in the last
four games. ... The Mavericks expect to have reserve centers Alexis Ajinca
and Ian Mahinmi back for tonight's game. The pair went to Mexico with
assistant GM Keith Grant to take care of visa issues.
Dojo年輕時的偶象是Armstrong
因為當時他支持魔術隊
而Armstrong正是球隊的PG
多年後Dojo發現他與他的偶象在同隊
Dojo現在小牛隊球員
Armstrong是小牛隊助理教練
Dojo表示他打球一直以Armstrong為模板
但是他不喜歡去製造進攻犯規
Armstrong生涯製造了很多
他表示若有機會他有很多東西可以教Dojo
