"Humble" Billy Hayes, the Mavericks PA announcer for nine years, has left town for family reasons and now the team is looking for a replacement. Owner Mark Cuban said they want someone "who can embrace the attitude of the Mavs' fan." An estimated 80 "voices" vying to replace Hayes showed up Tuesday for try-outs at the American Airlines Center. Many of them said they aren't sure Cuban means, either. "I know he likes high energy," said Michael Rey, a former Dallas broadcaster who auditioned. One after another, they arrived in suits and ties, or jeans and T-shirts. They possessed mellifluous voices that sounded like longtime Saturday Night Live announcer Don Pardo after too much stress and coffee. Steve Letson, Mavericks vice president of operations said he hopes to have the new announcer on board in time for the home opener against the Washington Wizards on Oct. 27. Mark Cuban, the team's owner, drifted in and out of the auditions through the afternoon. He will play a key role in deciding who succeeds Billy Hayes. A signature line would be nice, he said. Something like boxing ring announcer Michael Buffer's trademark, "Let's Get Ready To Ruuuuuumble!" "Who ever heard of that one before he did it?" Cuban said.
