Source close to Cleveland Cavaliers' Anderson Varejao says reports Cavs
forward talked to Mavs owner are false

Anderson Varejao is a man of international mystery this week.
On Wednesday, a Brazilian blog released an interview with Varejao discussing
a wide range of topics -- from the Cavaliers' season to the Los Angeles
Lakers winning the title to his upcoming free agency. The last topic is where
it got sticky, though, and was getting reaction everywhere from Cleveland to
Dallas to Miami.
In the interview, with the blog NBA WebSportiva, Varejao is quoted in
Portuguese as saying: "I've had two conversations with [Dallas Mavericks
owner] Mark Cuban this month and he offered me a three-year deal worth $11
million [about $19 million U.S.]. But I told him that I would like to remain
in Cleveland, unless they do not want renew my contract and I can analyze the
proposal of Dallas."
It is a little rough in translation. Or lost depending on who you ask. To
understand the reaction, know that if Cuban or anyone from the Dallas
organization had contacted Varejao before July 1, when he is expected to
become a free agent, it would be tampering and subject to punishment by the
NBA.
A source close to Varejao said Friday that Varejao did not make those
statements and that he has not talked to Cuban. Varejao is currently on
vacation in Miami.
A Mavericks source said Cuban has never spoken directly to Varejao at any
time in his career. Dallas General Manager Donnie Nelson denied the contact
to DallasBasketball.com, a site that tracks the Mavericks, saying: "I cannot
and will not comment on any player in this circumstance. Nor would anyone in
our organization do so. I can only say that any such conversation like that
with a player would get a team in trouble. There is no sense to it. There is
no motivation to do it. It didn't happen."
The Cavs had no comment on the report. The team has said it hopes to re-sign
Varejao, who is expected to opt out of the last year of his contract by the
June 30 deadline.
The Mavericks do not have salary-cap space but a three-year contract at their
mid-level exception would be worth roughly $19 million. It will be
interesting to see if they are one of the teams that bids for Varejao when he
officially becomes a free agent.
More trade rumors: Yahoo! Sports reported Friday that the Cavs have had
renewed talks with the New Jersey Nets about trading for Vince Carter. Just
like with the Cavs checking in with the Phoenix Suns on Shaquille O'Neal,
the Cavs have had trade talks with 20 teams over the past 10 days
and some have gone over old ground. That includes some of the chats from the
trade deadline, which included names like O'Neal, Carter, Richard
Jefferson of the Milwaukee Bucks, Antawn Jamison of the Washington Wizards
and many more. With many teams looking to dump salary and the Cavs having
the ability to take on salary, they are going to be in even more talks and
thus the rumors leading up to next week's draft.
Yao's take: Those are the rumors in the United States, now onto a rumor in
China that has been hot the past month. Even before news that a Chinese group
of investors were buying a share of the Cavs became news in the West, the
rumors of the purchase and Yao Ming's future were being discussed in Chinese
newspapers and on Internet message boards.
There is a belief in the Far East that Kenny Huang, who is leading the
minority ownership group's investment in the Cavs and has done numerous
marketing deals with Yao and the Houston Rockets the past several years, will
work to bring Yao to Cleveland in 2010.
Yes, the summer of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh is also the
summer of Yao, who will be a free agent. This week Yao discussed it for the
first time in an interview with a Shanghai television station, a translation
of which was obtained by the Associated Press on Friday.
"This [going to the Cavs] is all an unknown," Yao said in the interview.
"I've already been with Houston for such a long time, I still have much
affection for this team. This past season we were very successful, and that
let me see some hope."
Yao, though, seemed to dismiss the notion that having Chinese ownership would
affect his future choices.
"Regardless of whether it's a Chinese boss, or a foreign boss, they're both
bosses and a boss is just a boss," Yao said.
Those comments could be considered pretty much a copy of what James has said
about his intentions in 2010. James is happy in Cleveland but knows he has
options, just like Yao. Leaving wiggle room is both prudent but fuels
speculation, which Cavs fans can certainly relate to.
Like the New York Knicks, the Cavs -- right now -- could have enough
salary-cap space to sign Yao next summer in addition to re-signing James. And
like with James and the Cavs, those plans are still so far off that right now
all of it is speculation.
