BOSTON -- Red Sox right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka is officially in the home stretch of his recovery from a mild right rotator cuff strain and is on track to be back in the rotation soon, perhaps by next week. Matsuzaka will throw side sessions on Wednesday and Friday, and will likely face hitters after that. The question is whether he will face those hitters in a simulated game or in a Minor League rehab start before being rejoining the rotation. "We'll probably sit down the next couple of days and discuss with him and the trainers on where it goes from there," said Red Sox manager Terry Francona. "I think we've got a pretty good idea how we feel about the next couple of weeks with our pitching, how we set up and everything. We just want to make sure we talk to people." Matsuzaka, who is 8-0 with a 2.53 ERA, is eager to return to action. "Everything has been fine and on schedule," Matsuzaka told the Japanese media. "I will throw on the side [Wednesday]. I haven't heard anything about the schedule yet, but I will follow what the team says. I am going to the road trips with the team same as usual." When the Red Sox slide Matsuzaka back into the rotation, don't be surprised if they do it in a fashion that gives extra rest to some of the other starters.
