It has been known since the pioneering work of Clem et al. (1985)
that fish monocytes/macrophages are able to produce factors
with IL-1 bioactivity. In this study,
supernatants from LPS-stimulated monocytes
of channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus)
could substitute for intact monocytes,
allowing macrophage-depleted lymphocytes to
undergo mitogen-induced proliferation
and antigen-induced antibody production.
