Abstract:
After a good run of over a century the days of the internal combustion engine
are numbered. The transition to electric propulsion will be much faster than
anticipated. Over 20% of the new vehicles in the author’s Silicon Valley
town are electric already. To understand the full impact, this presentation
will address the deep technology of the new generation of cars. What are the
key drivetrain and battery technologies, and how can that be optimized for
maximum efficiency and performance? Based on Newtonian physics and electrical
engineering, we will analyze motor efficiency, battery parasitics,
regeneration opportunities and well-to-wheel environmental emissions. We will
also analyze the specific situation and best Solution for Taiwan.
Biography:
Dr. Patrick Groeneveld is distinguished engineer at Cadence Design Systems in
San Jose. He is also teaching at Stanford University. Before joining Cadence,
he was Chief Technologist at Magma Design. From 2001 until 2005, he was Full
Professor of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University. Patrick received
his MSc and PhD degrees from Delft University of Technology in 1987 and 1991,
respectively.
