Foster: 6
The hero of the Carling Cup triumph was fortunate when he miscontrolled a
back pass midway through first half and was almost caught by Saha. Tipped
by TV pundit Joe Royle as the future England keeper and who would argue
with the ex-City and now Oldham boss? Excellent injury time save from Cahill.
Rafael Da Silva: 7
Everyone thought it would be the Neville brothers making history leading out
the respective teams but instead it was the 18 year old Brazilian twins who
trod the Wembley turf... the first time they have played in the same United
starting eleven. Rightly booked for foul on speedy Baines. Gritty performance
Ferdinand: 7
Maintained his superb midweek Euro form and was rarely troubled even though
he had even more talking to do giving confidence to the Fergie fledglings
all around him. Top show in game dominated by defenders. Unlucky with penalty.
Vidic: 8
The official man of the match was as solid as you like and so much better with
the calming Ferdinand by his side. Power show from one of the favourites for
the PFA player of the year. Bemused Everton who saw the United team sheet an
hour before kick off without the big guns would have loved Vidic to have been
among the missing. Telling touch late on as Everton pushed for winner and he
scored his pen.
Fabio Da Silva: 7
Fortunate it was ex-Red Phil Neville who out-smarted him early on rather
than an Everton striker who would have been more likely to punish him. The
experience before going off injured to be replaced by Evra will have boosted
his football education.
Welbeck: 7
Much more confident than in his last Wembley final appearance. Had three first
half opportunities to break deadlock despite a deeper role. Should have won a
penalty with his pace and trickery. Ref Mike Riley was clearly sure Jagielka's
challenge was fair but an animated Sir Alex showed his total disgust with a
justified touchline protest.
Gibson: 6
Gave little away against much more experienced midfield opponents but needs
to raise his game if he's going to be United regular. Always manages to get
at least one spectacular effort in.
Anderson: 8
With no Rooney or Ronaldo this was a great opportunity for the Brazilian
playmaker to shine. He wasn't particularly entertaining but was effective
enough in the engine room. Highlight was a great surge forward and blast
just off target. Consistently looked the most likely to open scoring in
normal time.
Park: 5
Never knows when he's beaten. In one memorable moment as the hour approached
he battled through three weak Everton tackles. Got stronger the longer the
game went on and had United's best chance shooting inches wide after neat
dribble.
Tevez: 6
Typically busy but with all these kids coming on so strongly you can
understand the reluctance to pay up to make his loan deal permanent
Macheda: 6
Wonder kid making his first start after his heroics from the bench had the
first meaningful effort of the game. The 17-year-old Italian who lives with
his family in Sale has energy to burn. It is no wonder United made such
efforts to woo him from Lazio. Tired after putting in all all-action shift
without reward.
Subs:
Evra: 7
(for Fabio Da Silva 62 mins) Took over from the injured Rio twin seamlessly
to keep the pressure on Everton's right flank.
Scholes: 5
(for Park 67 mins) With such youthful energy in the line-up, the old maestro
was introduced to add guile as United attempted to settle it before extra
time. Struggled to make impact except tackling back.
Berbatov: 5
(for Macheda 90 mins) - A good ploy saving him for extra time as United with
three big names off the bench and in the fray had a much more familiar look.
Clever touches that didn't come to anything. Pathetic penalty.
