Criticised by Mancini in October for a lack of consistency, Johnson accepted his lack of exposure at City could affect his England chances. Johnson has been linked with a move away from the Blues this summer with Sunderland – his hometown club – leading the chase. But whether or not his future remains at City, Bell insists the player should learn from the disappointments of the last 12 months. For despite being included in Hodgson's standby list for the Championships in Poland and Ukraine this summer, Bell reckons Johnson is destined to stay on the outside looking in – unless he shows a willingness to improve. “Adam has not progressed since he came to City,” said Bell, who played 394 times for the Blues. “I would have included him in my squad for the Euros but, having said that, I've seen him consistently at City and there are one or two things as a coach I would have said to him before now to improve his game.
