On track to set a career high in innings this season, Rockies right-hander
Jon Gray will instead spend the rest of the year on the sideline after
fracturing his left foot. It wasn't immediately clear how he suffered the
injury.
Gray has been placed on the 60-day injured list, the Rockies announced
Wednesday, and the team selected the contract of right-hander Tim Melville
from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Melville was slated to start Wednesday's game against the D-backs at Chase
Field in place of Gray. Melville, 29, last appeared in the Majors in 2017
with the Padres, and he has allowed 18 earned runs with 15 strikeouts and 15
walks over 14 2/3 career innings.
Gray, who has shown promising flashes throughout his career amid
inconsistency and injury problems, held the Marlins scoreless over eight
innings of work in his most recent start, on Friday. The 27-year-old, taken
third overall by Colorado in the 2013 Draft, owns a 3.84 ERA in 150 frames
this year, significantly improving upon his 5.12 mark from 2018. The
right-hander also spent time on the injured list in 2016 and '17, and he
spent a stint in Triple-A last summer after recording a 5.77 ERA over his
first 17 starts.
Gray will be arbitration eligible for the second time this offseason, and he
can become a free agent after the 2021 campaign.
