Red Sox interested in Taiwan series in 2015 FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Major League Baseball is moving ahead with plans to stage an opening series in Taiwan in 2015 -- and the Red Sox have expressed an interest in being one of the two teams taking part. The Red Sox opened the 2008 season in Tokyo with a two-game series against the Oakland A's. Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino serves on MLB's International Committee and is enthused over the prospect of the Sox taking part. "We've had some internal discussions about it,'' said Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, "but nothing formal has happened yet. We're really not at an advanced stage. I can probably tell you more in a couple of months.'' In an effort to market the game, MLB has staged a half-dozen or so series at the start of the year overseas. Next month, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks will play a two-game set in Sydney, Australia to kick off the 2014 season. MLB has had four season-opening series in Japan -- the most recent of which, last year, featured Oakland and Seattle -- another in Mexico in 1999 and another in Puerto Rico in 2001. When the Sox opened in Tokyo in 2008, the team's Baseball Operations department wasn't enamored with the idea, feeling that the extensive travel was an unnecessary distraction during spring training. But according to Werner, there's less objection to the idea now under GM Ben Cherington. "We've talked to them about it,'' said Werner. "It's obviously a wear-and-tear on the body. But it's a long season and I sort of feel like you can get over it. The reason to do it is to expand the game. The NFL does it (every year) several times a year. "Does it maybe have a marginal effect on a game or two? Yes. But flying from Boston to Oakland after you play a game on Sunday night has a disruptive effect, too.''
