Team no one wants to face: Detroit. Justin Verlander and Doug Fister head the
rotation, and Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are in the middle of the
lineup. Who wants to face that? They're dangerous.
Favorite due for a fall: The Nationals have had a great year, and Davey
Johnson has done an incredible job, but a good pitching staff can bust them
inside and they won't hit at all — not enough quick bats. Gio Gonzalez is an
excitable guy and needs to be under control in Game 1 or this could unravel
in a hurry.
Hitters with holes: Nick Swisher, Yankees; Jay Bruce, Reds. Swisher can be
pitched to very easily. You just have to take advantage of his
aggressiveness. He gets too hyped up at this time of year. I think he knows
how big this postseason is for him, too. He's got to have a good one or the
Yankees probably won't bring him back.
The Reds are baffling, especially Bruce. These guys should have developed
into more complete hitters by now. But they go through stretches where they
look absolutely lost. And if Joey Votto doesn't start to show power, Bruce
will get even more eager to pick up the slack and he could really be
exploited. When he gets out of his kilter, he'll swing at everything. I don't
think there's a streakier hitter in baseball.
Bruce
Don't forget about: Stephen Drew, Athletics; Allen Craig, Cardinals. Drew has
a chance to have a real impact. He's facing four right-handed starters in the
Tigers' series. He's been swinging a much better bat.
Craig amazes. His best tool was always his bat, but he exemplifies the
confidence all these younger guys on the Cardinals have.
X factor: Marco Scutaro used to be one of the two or three guys who cared on
some bad Oakland teams. He's loving being in the middle of this with the
Giants.
Manager to watch: Jim Leyland. You think you got him figured out one game,
and then he'll completely surprise you. This is a team with no speed, and
they strike out a ton, but he's not afraid to hit-and-run and steal. You
can't get a true read on him. You got be on your toes with this guy because
he'll fool you. Just when you think he's going to sit back and wait for that
home run, he'll be aggressive.
Mr. October will be: Yu Darvish, Rangers. He lives for the spotlight. He'd
love to be the guy who gets them into the division series and beats the
Yankees. It wouldn't be surprising if he's the most dominant starter in the
postseason.
