Sanchez Captures First ATP Title
Chile's Marcelo Rios denied title in his native country for fourth time in
final.
Spain's David Sanchez captured his first ATP title on Sunday after defeating
Chilean Marcelo Rios in the final of the BellSouth Open by Rosen in Vina del
Mar, Chile. Sanchez rallied after dropping the first set to defeat Rios, 1-6,
6-3, 6-3 in his first ever ATP final. The 24-year-old Zamora, Spain native
became the fourth first-time winner this year on the ATP circuit, joining
Nikolay Davydenko (Adelaide), Hyung-Taik Lee (Sydney) and Martin Verkerk
(Milan).
Sanchez, who began the year with first round losses in Doha and Auckland and
a second round defeat to Nicolas Lapentti at the Australian Open, improved to
6-3 on the year. Along with his comeback against Rios, Sanchez marched back
from a set down in his second round match with No. 4 seed Jose Acasuso and
quarterfinal match against Andrea Gaudenzi.
Rios hadn't dropped a set en route to the final and looked well on his way to
his 19th career title after cruising through the opening set before Sanchez
won the final two sets. It was the fourth time in his career that Rios was
denied a shot at winning a title in his native Chile after losing in the
Santiago final in 1995, '96 and '97.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Sanchez: "I'm very happy to win my first ATP title and want to dedicate the win
to my coach (Jose Luis Aparisi) who has been with me for a long time and
deserves the credit for this win."
"I'm sorry to beat Marcelo (Rios) at his home. I hope that Spain will one day
give me the support that this Chilean crowd gave Marcelo, because it's
fantastic."
"In the second set, there were a couple points where the match really turned
around for me."
"The courts here were fantastic this week and the tournament staff did a great
job putting together this Latin tournament. It's been difficult to put together
a tournament in this region lately and they did it very well."
Rios: "I'd like to congratulate David, who played great. I'm not happy to lose
today. Nobody likes to lose - especially at home. Not being able to give a win
to the Chilean crowd is not the best, but that is what makes tennis great."
"Hopefully I can win this tournament one day and dedicate my win to the home
crowd."
