Playing another night without Amare' Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin finally caught
up to the Knicks.
New York fell flat defensively and even though Carmelo Anthony scored 36
points on 11-of-24 shooting, Mike Woodson's current team fell to his former
team, the Atlanta Hawks, 100-90, at Phillips Arena on Friday night.
Losing without Lin and Stoudemire wouldn't normally be a surprise, but
considering how the Knicks played in beating the Orlando Magic by 22 points
on Wednesday, another win seemed entirely plausible.
Two of the Knicks, Anthony and Iman Shumpert, replicated Wednesday night's
effort, with the latter scoring 25 points on 9-of-14 shooting.
The rest of the roster failed to muster the same enthusiasm.
"We were sluggish, I thought, tonight," said Woodson as his record as interim
coach fell to 8-2. "I mean, for some reason we just didn't have the pep that
we had at the Garden the other night.
"I thought (Anthony) was great," Woodson continued. "I thought he played solid
throughout the game, but we need J.R. Smith making shots, you know, (Steve)
Novak, they weren't really leaving him so it made it tough for him to really
get the openings that he needed to bang in shots. And we got to get Tyson
(Chandler) more involved offensively, I think."
Even while battling a groin strain, Anthony had no trouble driving, cutting
to the basket or getting out on the fast break. He hit seven of his first 12
shots from the field and managed to make an impact at the free throw line for
the third consecutive game, connecting on 13 of 14 attempts.
And just to show he hasn't forgotten his newfound commitment to defense,
Anthony also finished the game with nine rebounds (six defensive), five
steals and two blocks.
However, all of Anthony's production was essentially negated by 24 putrid
minutes from Baron Davis.
Starting in place of Lin, Davis made just two of his first seven field goals
and turned the ball over three times in the first half to finish with a -10
plus-minus rating.
When Davis wasn't struggling on the floor, he could be seen on the stationary
bike trying to keep his troublesome hamstring loose.
"I watched Baron, his running, tonight and he struggled a little bit,"
Woodson said. "He was laboring some. Again, as coach, I got to carefully
watch that and make sure that, you know, we have him over the long haul. I
think tomorrow I got to start thinking about Toney Douglas playing a little
bit and probably extending (Mike) Bibby a little bit more."
Exacerbating things for Woodson was his old nemesis from his head-coaching
tenure with the Hawks, Josh Smith. Woodson's first rookie tormented the
Knicks in the first half, scoring 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and began the
second half by tipping in a layup on the fast break while being fouled by
Anthony. Smith hit the subsequent free throw and pushed Atlanta's lead to 13
with a dunk 30 seconds later.
The Knicks did make some defensive adjustments on Smith and even sparked
their own third-quarter run thanks to a misguided pass from the Hawks forward.
Shumpert intercepted the cross-court heave from Smith, took the ball up court
and hit a layup while absorbing a foul from Hawks point guard Jeff Teague.
The free throw cut the lead to 7 with 1:30 left in the third. Anthony soon
followed with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that cut the lead to 74-69 at the
end of three.
"We dug a hole and we kept grinding," Woodson said. "I think we cut it to two
and then we just couldn't make free throws. We put ourselves in position to
go up, I thought."
But just as the Knicks seemed to figure out a strategy against Smith,
shooting guard Willie Green began to heat up. The Detroit product scored
20 points off the bench (Joe Johnson and Smith scored 28 and 23 respectively
for Atlanta) thanks to two key 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
"I thought we did a really great job on (Smith) the second half," Woodson
said. "Then Willie Green got going and simple pin downs where we just didn't
fight over screens, the effort just wasn't there like I saw it the other
night. We got to get back to that."
爆走,執行了些簡單的pin downs(閃擋戰術?)
The Knicks will likely be without Lin (knee) for Saturday's home game
against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The team alerted some members of the media
to explain that the second-year point guard will return before the end of
the regular season. Meanwhile Stoudemire's return remains listed as 2-4
weeks following the epidural he received on Thursday for his bulging disc.
"We just got to go back home now and prepare for Cleveland and put ourselves
in position, you know, because I think Milwaukee won tonight and Philly got
beat tonight so nobody's going anywhere so we got to just handle our
business," Woodson concluded.
The Knicks (26-26) now trail the Boson Celtics (29-22) for first place in
the Atlantic Division by three and a half games, but they still have a one
and a half game lead over the Bucks for the eighth seed in the Eastern
Conference Playoffs.
