Knicks Turn Slow Start Into Easy Finish

To measure just how far the Knicks have come, how much has changed in a short
period, one could count the number of bodies used Wednesday night or the
standing ovations they enjoyed or the giddy chants that occasionally echoed
across Madison Square Garden.

When fans are chanting, “We want Novak!” something has gone right.

Steve Novak, who went from benchwarmer to indispensable shooter over the last
four weeks, earned that serenade after scoring 17 points in a furious
second-half rally, leading the Knicks to a wild 120-103 rout of the Cleveland
Cavaliers.
四周內, Novak從原本冷板凳到現在每場球賽不可或缺的球員, 在今晚激烈興奮的下半

The victory pushed the Knicks (18-18) back to .500 as they opened the second
half of the season. It was their 10th win in 13 games and possibly the most
unusual of them all. They trailed by 17 in the first half, then outscored the
Cavaliers, 71-42, in the final 24 minutes.

The Knicks’ offense, after sputtering early, turned lethal in the second
half as Novak, Carmelo Anthony and Jeremy Lin got rolling. The Knicks
finished with a season-high 30 assists and shot 51 percent.

Lin, who had his worst game as a starter last Thursday in Miami, rebounded
with a 19-point, 13-assist effort and played a manageable 33 minutes. Baron
Davis had his best game since joining the rotation with 8 assists and 4
points in 14 minutes, allowing Lin a needed breather in the second half.

Kyrie Irving, the first pick in the 2011 draft, had 22 points and 7 assists
for Cleveland (13-20) but was contained in the second half.

Tyson Chandler had 13 points, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks, despite a sore left
wrist that has been bothering him for more than a week. Chandler had hinted
at possibly needing a rest, but he played 31 minutes, and the Knicks needed
his presence for just about all of them.

The Knicks trailed for the first 33 minutes of the game. Their offense perked
up when their 3-pointers started to fall.

After an 0-for-6 first half, the Knicks hit four 3-pointers in the third
quarter, three by Novak, as they turned a 12-point deficit into a 2-point
lead by the start of the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Novak was still
firing, hitting two 3-pointers that extended the Knicks’ lead to 92-84.

The rally started early in the third, when Lin drove for two layups and fed
Amar’e Stoudemire for another in an 8-0 burst that cut Cleveland’s lead to
63-59. The arena came to life for the first time, and as the Knicks headed
into a timeout, Lin bellowed, “Lets go!”

Anthony hit the Knicks’ first 3-pointer, with 5 minutes 11 seconds left in
the third. Novak struck moments later, hitting two 3-pointers as the Knicks
took their first lead, 75-74, with 2:37 to play. Novak closed the quarter
with another 3-pointer for an 82-80 lead.

No Knick needed a break during All-Star weekend more than Lin. The instant
stardom and a suddenly heavy workload had left him exhausted, and at least
contributed to his 8-point, 3-assist game in Miami last Thursday. He returned
refreshed.
沒其他尼克球員比Lin更需要明星賽這一周的休息時間了(體力青筍筍), 突如其來的成

After deferring early in the game, Lin started attacking the basket again,
looking more like the player who revived the Knicks last month. By halftime,
he had 10 points, 5 assists and a bloody nose — the result of an inadvertent
forearm by Omri Casspi.
休息後Lin又回復先前的好表現, 中場時已經有10分5助攻, 跟一個流鼻血的鼻子 XDD
Stoudemire’s struggles in the first half of the season carried through the
break and into Wednesday’s game. He missed six of his first seven shots,
most of them midrange jumpers, contributing to a poor start that left the
Knicks trailing by double digits early in the second quarter. He was also
inattentive to Antawn Jamison, who led the Cavaliers with 15 points in the
first half.

For the first time this season, the Knicks had a full complement of players,
with the returns of Iman Shumpert and Josh Harrellson. A team that once had
no depth is now overloaded with capable players, forcing role changes,
rotation tweaks and some revised thinking.

D’Antoni, who has often stuck to a seven- or eight-man rotation, used 10
players in the first quarter alone. That did not include Harrellson, who was
just cleared to play on Monday and who could become the 11th player in the
rotation because of his 3-point shooting and defensive tenacity.

With a heavy March schedule, D’Antoni said he may need 10 or 11 players a
night, though the composition of that group and the allocation of minutes
could change from game to game, depending on players’ production, health and
relative fatigue. He said he was perfectly comfortable using a deep rotation
all the way into the playoffs.

“Because there’s no drop-off,” he said. “As a matter of fact, I don’t
know if my 10th or 11th guy is not better than my third guy.”

Even with an expanded rotation, Toney Douglas remains a forgotten figure.
Douglas, the opening day starting point guard, was left on the bench for the
sixth straight game. He has played once in the last 11 games. “We believe in
Toney,” Mike D’Antoni said. “We still think he can play. But somebody
would have to get hurt or fall out of favor. Or something would have to
happen.” With the return of Baron Davis, the emergence of Jeremy Lin and the
signing of J. R. Smith, Douglas is essentially the Knicks’ sixth guard. “
Right now it’s tough to get everybody in,” D’Antoni said
